Miami U.S. Attorney Wilfredo Ferrer says that Florida has the highest rate of ID theft in the country, with Miami leading the way. The high rate of ID theft corresponds to a high rate of Tax Fraud: the false identities often being used to made fraudulent IRS claims.
Ferrer is on a task force that deals with this type of crime, which is why he’s issuing such statements. I’d like to see some broader crime numbers: as I suspect Florida also leads the country in face-eating, drunken horse riding, and checkout lane rage leading to shopping cart battery as well. We probably lead the country in crimes against elderly, and we probably lead the country in crimes by the elderly as well. Please let me know if anyone can find some hard statistics to back up my theory!
