LCSO Has a Shady Seat Belt Checkpoint in North Fort Myers This Morning

Thanks to a friend of the firm who has given me a heads-up that LCSO set up some sort of seat belt checkpoint this morning at 41 and Hancock Bridge. Why shady? First, checkpoints are only legally authorized for DUI. There are exceptions, but I have my doubts that the proper procedures were followed. Secondly, my friend was stopped under questionable circumstances. It sounds like the seat belt checkpoint may have just been an excuse to stop people to try to catch them for other infractions. That means a lot of innocent people harassed illegally on the chance of catching a few, and it’s improper. FMPD and FHP have also been known to conduct questionable (non-DUI) checkpoints.

  1. That is a pretty shady use of a checkpoint. They taught us they were only allowed for public safety like DUI.
