Simple drug law change can save lives

Stephanie Rose Bongiovi – daughter of Jon Bon Jovi

New York and nine other states have enacted “Good Samaritan” laws; which preclude prosecution for people who seek help for people who overdose.  Since Florida is not one of these states, I wasn’t really familiar with them until I read this article about the recent overdose of Bon Jovi’s daughter. These laws save lives, as high numbers of overdoses are witnessed yet go unreported, often because the witnesses fear criminal repercussions for calling 911.  Ms. Bongiovi and her friend that sought help were arrested, but charges quickly dropped.  The need to prosecute drug users is surely outweighed by the need to save lives.
